What Rain Does to Pool Chemistry (and What to Do After a Storm)

Fast answer: Rain barely touches your chemistry by dilution. An inch of rain on an average backyard pool adds under 2% new water, and rainwater carries almost no alkalinity to push pH around. What crashes your chlorine is everything the storm brings with it: leaves, lawn runoff, dirt, pollen and fertilizer, all of which burn sanitizer fast. After a storm the order matters. Clear the debris, drain back to mid-skimmer, then test and re-chlorinate.

Do the dilution math before you panic

Take a normal 16 ร— 32 rectangle, roughly 15,000 gallons, 512 square feet of surface. One inch of rain landing on it works out to about 43 cubic feet, or 320 gallons. That's 2% of the pool. Diluting 50 ppm of stabilizer by 2% leaves you at 49. No test kit made can see that.

The acid-rain story gets repeated every spring and at that scale it's mostly noise. Rain is acidic, usually somewhere around pH 5 to 5.6, but pH without alkalinity behind it has no staying power. Your 80โ€“120 ppm of total alkalinity exists precisely to absorb hits like this. Three hundred gallons of weak acid landing in fifteen thousand gallons of buffered water is a rounding error. Test after a summer shower and pH typically moves a tenth, if it moves at all.

Scale changes the answer completely. Six inches over two days is closer to 1,900 gallons into that same pool, about 13% new water, and now the dilution is real. Alkalinity, calcium, salt and CYA all step down by roughly that much. A salt pool reading 3,200 ppm can land near 2,800 and start flashing a low-salt warning at you. That's the storm worth retesting everything for.

The chlorine crash has nothing to do with the water

Say you tested Friday evening at 3 ppm free chlorine, everything clean. A storm rolls through Saturday night. Sunday morning you're reading 0.3 ppm and the water looks dull. Rain didn't dilute 3 ppm down to 0.3, because 2% dilution would have left you at 2.9. Something ate it.

That something arrived with the weather. Wind drops leaves, pollen and dust in. Runoff sheets off the deck and the lawn carrying dirt, insects, grass clippings and whatever fertilizer went down last month. Every bit of that organic load is chlorine demand, and chlorine spends itself oxidizing the mess long before it gets around to sanitizing anything. Phosphates from fertilizer don't consume chlorine directly, but they're algae food, and the storm just delivered a buffet to a pool with no sanitizer left in it.

Which is why storms and green pools keep showing up in the same week. The bloom isn't caused by the rain. It's caused by thirty-odd hours at zero chlorine while nobody was looking, with fresh nutrients sitting in the water.

The post-storm order of operations

Debris first, chemicals second. Skim the surface, empty the skimmer and pump baskets, and get the leaves off the floor before you add anything. Shocking a pool with a wet leaf layer on the bottom is paying to bleach leaves. They'll eat the dose, and the next morning you'll be wondering why chlorine didn't hold.

Then the water level. If the pool has risen above the middle of the skimmer opening, the skimmer stops skimming, and surface debris just circles instead of leaving. Drain or pump back down to mid-skimmer before anything else. Now test: free chlorine and pH always, alkalinity after a soaker, and calcium, salt and CYA after anything that dumped several inches.

When it's a flood, not a rainstorm

Different rules apply once the pool overflows and the yard becomes part of it. Muddy water, a silt line on the tile, possible septic or storm-drain contamination: treat that as a full reset. Heavy shock, clarifier or floc for the silt, a vacuum to waste, then a proper filter cleaning once the water clears. Whatever you do, don't drain the pool while the ground is still saturated. Hydrostatic pressure under an empty shell will lift it out of the ground, and that repair costs more than every chemical you'll buy in a decade.

Do I need to shock my pool after every rain?+

No. A short shower on a pool holding 3 ppm free chlorine usually needs nothing but a skim and a test. Shock when the storm was long, windy or debris-heavy, or when the test comes back under 1 ppm. Test first, then decide.

Why did my pH drop after it rained?+

Either the rain was heavy enough to dilute your alkalinity, or your alkalinity was already low and had nothing to buffer with. A pool at 100 ppm TA shrugs off normal rain. A pool at 50 ppm swings with every storm, so fix the alkalinity and the pH stops chasing the weather.

Should I add chemicals before a storm?+

Raising free chlorine toward the top of its range the day before is worth doing, since you're buying a reserve to burn through. Skip adding stabilizer, calcium or salt right before heavy rain, because you may be about to dilute exactly what you just paid for.

Do I have to drain water out of the pool after heavy rain?+

Only down to mid-skimmer, which is about function rather than chemistry. Above that line the skimmer can't pull surface debris. Pump or drain off the excess with the filter valve on waste, or a submersible pump if the overflow is large.
